Special Education Department
Welcome to Greensville County Public Schools Special Education Website. It is the policy of the Greensville County Public Schools to adhere to federal and state regulations as they have been promulgated by the United States Department of Education and the Virginia Board of Education to implement special education programs for children with disabilities, consistent with the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Greensville County Public Schools (GCPS) maintains an active and continuing child find program designed to identify, locate and evaluate those children from birth to 21, inclusive, who are in need of special education and related services. GCOS coordinates child find activities for infants and toddlers (birth to age two, inclusive) with District 19 Infant Council. A complete list describing children who may benefit from special education and related services can be found in the Annual Plan, developed each year and approved by the GCPS School Board and the Virginia Department of Educaiton.
Annually, GCPS conducts a public awareness campaign to inform the community of the availability of a free, appropriate public education and the provision of special education and reated services to those who are in need. The campaign is designed to generate referrals, explain the nature of disabilities, the early warning signs of disabilities, and the need for services to begin early.
Each local education agency (LEA) must spend a proportionate amount of its Section 611 and 619 allocaitons on providing special education and related services (including direct services) to parentally-placed private school children with disabilities.
